Rogue Rodents: Keeping Mice and Rats Out of Your Home This Fall and Winter

mouse-1708374_640As Fall quickly approaches, and we look toward Winter here in Central Florida, we don't anticipate days of snow and ice, or frigid temperatures, but we do expect and plan for cooler temperatures, and what they mean for our homes and the pests that like to invade them. One of the primary pest culprits during the Fall and Winter are rodents, specifically mice and rats, as they don't love the cold weather and prefer to be nestled warm and cozy in your attic...or your closet. Preparing for this ahead of time can help keep your home pest-free this season, and we have some tips to help you do just that:

Keeping Rodents Out is Easier Than Getting Them Out. Prevention is easier than solution when it comes to pest control, especially when discussing rodents. Rats and mice (especially mice!) can fit through openings you probably don't expect, and will do so in order to find warmth, and food, inside your home. Small spaces around dryer vent pipes, around windows or doors, and even through vents in your attic space can be like putting out a "Welcome" sign for rodents, so sealing them up is key to keeping your house free of furry critters. Additionally, keeping plant growth, unsealed garbage cans, etc. away from your home's exterior discourages rodents from being around your house's perimeter in the first place, making it much less likely for them to get inside.

Leave Trapping to the Professionals. If you suspect that you have a rodent problem, it might be temping to "save a few dollars" and go with the DIY method of trapping the creature(s) yourself, but this can be risky, and actually might not be cost-effective in the long run. Laying simple traps yourself might get rid of one or two mice, or (if you're lucky) a rat, but chances are if you have one, there are plenty more that you don't see. Professionals know where and how to lay the traps, and/or bait, to pull all of the pesky rodents out of hiding and get rid of them entirely. What's more, trapping a rat can prove risky if you don't have high-quality, professional grade traps. Rats carry disease, and dealing with a live rat, or even a dead one you have to dispose of, can pose a threat to you if you aren't prepared.
