Feeling Sick? The Flu Isn’t The Only “Bug” You Need to Worry About

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWith the flu outbreak going on throughout the country, and our own Polk County region being hit hard with multiple cases of the most recent influenza strain, people are getting nervous about that tickle in their throat and just what it could mean. While the flu is most definitely a "bug" to watch out for, there are lots of actual insects that can, in fact, make you sick. It's important to know which "bugs" in your area could make you sick, and the symptoms to watch out for, so you know if it's just a virus, or something more.
Common insects that leave you feeling under the weather include:
  • Ticks. Not only do they carry Lyme disease, various fevers, and other illnesses, but in large amounts, they can also cause anemia. Even if you don't contract any sickness, their bite site is easily infected and can become inflamed quickly.
  • Bedbugs. Bedbugs can carry various bacteria, and can infect you with a single bite. Even if they aren't carrying pathogens, their bites can be itchy, painful, and downright uncomfortable.
  • Mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are known for carrying a plethora of diseases, including Malaria, West Nile virus, and more. Because they are transmitters of so many sicknesses, it's best to eliminate and/or avoid them as much as possible.
